Setting up the Champlain VPN

Body

The Champlain Staff VPN uses a program called GlobalProtect, a new program and service as of October, 2024. Please read below to install and access the new VPN to use Champlain resources remotely.

This program is available only to Faculty and Staff on Champlain owned computers. Students may use the Champlain Viewportal if they have a need to access campus-only resources remotely.

Downloading the VPN - Windows:

First, navigate to https://tunnel.champlain.edu in a web browser. Please ensure this browser only has your Champlain Google account logged in, without any others like a personal Google account. This will ensure nothing conflicts with the download and sign-in process.

When you first access the website, it will present the standard Champlain sign-in screen. Click the "Sign In with Google" option to begin:

After signing in, you will reach the main downloads page. Click the "Download Windows 64 bit GlobalProtect Agent" link to begin the download:

You will see the download start in your browser. Once complete, click the downloaded file to begin the installation process:

This will launch the installer window. Leave all the options as default and continue to click "next" until the process completes. You may need to click "YES" if prompted to allow the process to continue.

The process is done once you reach the "installation complete" screen. Click "close" to close the installer window:

Launching the VPN - Windows:

After the install, nothing else will appear on your screen. To open the GlobalProtect VPN window, click the up arrow in your taskbar, then find the GlobalProtect icon:

Click the grey globe icon, as shown above, to open the main GlobalProtect window:

On first launch, click "get started" to begin! When asked, please enter the server name as written below to connect to the Champlain VPN, then click "connect":

tunnel.champlain.edu

The GlobalProtect program will switch to say "connecting" and open a second screen with the Champlain sign-in page. Please follow the login process as you normally would to sign in:

Once you complete the sign-in process, you'll be connected! If you do not see a confirmation screen, or if the program disappears, you can once again look for the icon in your taskbar. When connected, it will change to instead be a blue globe, as shown below:

Once you see the blue globe icon, you're connected! You can click the icon to also verify the connection in the GlobalConnect app:

Finally, you may disconnect from the VPN at any time using the button shown on the screen. To re-connect, simply follow the connection steps again. The tunnel server name should remain filled in - please do not delete it to ensure a quick and seamless process.

Downloading the VPN - Mac:

First, navigate to https://tunnel.champlain.edu in a web browser. Please ensure this browser only has your Champlain Google account logged in, without any others like a personal Google account. This will ensure nothing conflicts with the download and sign-in process.

When you first access the website, it will present the standard Champlain sign-in screen. Click the "Sign In with Google" option to begin:

After signing in, you will reach the main downloads page. Click the "Download Mac 32/64 Bit GlobalProtect Agent" link to begin the download:

If prompted, please be sure to "save" the download. You do not need to change the file name during this process.

Once saved, open the downloads section of your browser or on the dock of your computer. Click the GlobalProtect.pkg file in the downloads list to begin the installation process:

The setup process will begin - click "continue" to start the install:

On the Installation Type screen, leave all options as default and simply click "continue":

You will see one final confirmation screen, so click "install" to confirm:

You may be prompted to confirm your password to allow the install. Please enter your computer password in the prompt and click "install software":

The process will complete and confirm once it finalizes the install! As the process completes, you may see some alerts about notifications and background items being added to your Mac. These are expected and ok to allow or simply dismiss:

After confirming the install, you'll be prompted to move the installer file to the trash. We recommend doing so to keep your downloads folder clean:

Launching the VPN - Mac:

You may not see a window or an app to open to connect to the VPN. Instead, look for a globe icon in your top status bar. Click the icon and click "get started" to begin connecting:

Enter the server name as shown below when prompted, then click "connect":

tunnel.champlain.edu

The program will then change to show "connecting" and open a second window to prompt the login process. Once open, follow the Champlain Google sign-in process like you normally would:

Once the globe icon changes to show dual lines next to the globe, you're connected! You can also click the icon to show the status screen and verify that you're connected properly:

First connection prompts

When connecting for the first time, you may receive some additional alerts for the program to fully function properly. Please ensure that you allow them as shown below to ensure you have full connectivity while using the VPN.

If prompted, click the "open system settings" button on the system extension screen:

This will open a window in your System Settings. Look for the option to "allow" the extension from GlobalProtect:

Once again, you may be prompted to provide your Mac login. Please be sure to enter your computer password in the prompt:

Once you confirm with the "modify settings" button, you should no longer see the prompt in the Settings screen. You may close this window and continue using your computer.

Finally, you may also see a pop-up about Network Filtering. This is expected and necessary for the VPN to function properly. Champlain is not filtering your internet access, but this prompt is shown by MacOS since the VPN changes how some of your connectivity is routed to access Champlain internal resources.
