Body
The Profile content type allows you to display information about a person, usually but not necessarily one who works for Middlebury or attends one of Middlebury's programs. Each profile represents an individual which can then be grouped together on a page using the Profile Listing component. Profiles must be created and published before they can be used in a Profile Listing.
To create a Profile, follow our Adding Content guide as you would for any other type of content. Unlike Basic Content, Profiles cannot be assigned to a menu. All Profiles will live in a central location on each site at /people. This allows Profiles to be reused in multiple Profile Listings throughout the site. Most commonly this occurs when an instructor teaches courses in multiple departments and wishes to have their Profile shown in the list of faculty for each of those departments.
After you have created your profile using the instructions below, you must publish the profile and save the profile in order to add it to you profile list.
Fields
External Id
You can begin typing the name of the person in the External Id field and you will see a list of people matching your query. This list will only include people who are publicly visible in the Online Directory. If you are creating a Profile for a person who has not yet begun working for Middlebury, or a person who has retired, such as Emeriti Faculty, you may not see the person in the list. There are other instances where people have requested that their contact information not appear online. Make sure that the person whose profile you are creating is comfortable appearing on our website and if they are but do not appear in the list in the External Id field, open a ticket with ITS and we'll find the correct value for you.
Once you have selected a name from the options list, the field will be filled in with a long string of random-seeming letters and numbers. This is a unique ID for the individual that is kept in sync between Banner, Oracle, the Directory, and Drupal. It will be used to retrieve contact and course information for the individual associated with this profile.
This field is used to pull in contact information about the person based on their records in our central systems: Banner and Oracle HCM. Sometimes this information is not up-to-date. In these cases, please contact the appropriate office to have the record updated in the central system. For example, contact HR if a job title needs to be changed, or course scheduling if a list of courses is not accurate for an instructor. You can also override the values pulled in using the Override checkboxes below the fields described later in this documentation. This will not change their values in the central systems, but will allow you to show a different value on the website. This is commonly helpful when a job title needed to be truncated in the central system, but you wanted to show the full title on the website, such as "The John A. and Jane B. Doe '70 Chair of Department & Chair of Departmental Studies".
Full Name
This will appear as the title of the Profile and will be the text linked to the Profile when it appears in Profile Listings.
Pronouns
You may list the pronouns for this person, which will appear on the detail and list view of their profile, under their full name.
Teaser
These fields work as in other types of content. See our Titles and Teasers documentation for more information. Profiles should have featured images which use a 3:4 aspect ratio, usually a portrait photo of the individual. Earlier versions of Drupal attempted to get these images from our ID Card system, but we will no longer do so. We encourage you to upload a portrait photo for your profile. In its absence, a gray image of the institutional shield will be shown.
Components
Links
The Links field allows you to add one or multiple hyperlinks to external sites. This can be a link to a Curriculum Vitae document, a personal website, professional associations, or anything else related to the individual. Please note that there are specific fields for links to Social Media and Scholarly Identity sites available elsewhere and we discourage you from using the Links field for those purposes.
The two links shown in the screenshot above will be displayed on the profile page below the biography and next to the Social Media links as shown below.
Biography, Components, and Areas of Interest
These fields comprise the main "content" region of the profile. The Biography field can include a textual narrative of the individual's professional career. This can be supplemented with Image, Video, and additional Text using the Components field below. These Components work as elsewhere on our sites. The Areas of Interest field will appear below the Biography with that as its heading and can be used to highlight academic and professional interests. Please note that information about degrees, publications, and courses can be found elsewhere, under the Scholarly Identity tab.
Directory Information
If you entered an External Id above, the fields below will be populated with information from our central systems after you save the profile. The information will then be automatically updated each time you save the profile as well as put in a queue for automatic updates periodically. We estimate that profiles will have this information synced from our central systems about once a day.
Note: Office Hours updated here will automatically be updated in the Directory system. Hours updated in the Directory system have a lag time before they are automatically updated here.
Social Media
You can add links to the social media profiles associated with the person in the Profile. These links will appear as icons for each of the social media sites on the individual's profile as well as on the Profile Listing components which include them. We support LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo, and Instagram.
Scholarly Identity
This tab contains all information related to the academic interests, achievements, and publications of an individual. See the Middlebury Libraries guide on Scholarly Identity for more information about this concept. The Show Courses checkbox will attempt to show a list of courses taught by the individual based on the value of the External Id field and the data in Banner. This information comes through the searchable Course Catalog and is refreshed once a day.
ORCiD, Google Scholar, Scopus, and GitHub
These fields can contain the URL of the person's profile on each of those services. See the Middlebury Libraries guide on Scholarly Identity for more information about how each site can be used. Like the Social Media section, these links will display with an icon of each service on the profile page above the Publications area.
Academic Degrees and Publications
These text fields are used to contain information about degrees earned by the individual and their publications. Each will be displayed on the profile page with its own headline.
