Reporting Emails as Phishing

Phishing Emails in Gmail

How do I report an email as phishing?

Click the 3 vertical dots on the top right of an email message, then click the "report phishing" button:

Why should I use this option?

The "report phishing" button in gmail accomplishes two goals: reporting the email to Champlain's IS department, and training our Google filter to better block similar messages in the future.

What's the difference between reporting a message as phishing and reporting it as spam?

Reporting an email as phishing sends a high-alert signal to the Champlain IS department and the global Google email filters. Champlain internally, and Google, review the messages to verify if they might be phishing. This then can ensure dangerous phishing messages can be removed from any other Champlain inboxes, as well as mark emails from that sender with a red banner and automatically send them to the spam folder.

Reporting a message as spam has a lower priority, since this usually applies to marketing newsletters or other emails you might not want but that are not inherently dangerous. While the "report spam" button still moves the email out of your inbox and reports it, this doesn't trigger a high-priority alert for immediate action.

Can I still forward phishing messages to a Champlain IS staff member?

Please utilize the "report phishing" button instead. This ensures that the entire team receives an alert so that critical and time-sensitive action can occur even if someone is out of office.

If you are uncertain about an email's legitimacy, you may still forward it to champsupport@champlain.edu for an immediate review. ChampSupport and IS can take action if the email is a legitimate threat and help you with any immediate steps as needed.
