What is Gmail confidential mode?
Confidential mode in Gmail is a newer feature that allows the sender to place restrictions on the message.
With confidential mode, the author of an email (before sending) can:
- Set an expiration date for an email
- Revoke access to an email at any time
- Disable options for recipients to forward, copy, print, and download your emails
- Require recipients to open your emails with an SMS passcode
Confidential Mode is only available to set when using Gmail online at: https://mail.google.com - it is not available through a 3rd party program, like Outlook.
Recipients will be given an option to access the email contents if received and opened in a 3rd party email program.
When should I use confidential mode?
Enable confidential mode any time you want to limit the options a recipient has with an email. If you want to add an extra layer of protection so someone cannot forward, download, or have long-term access to a message, it may be a good option to enable.
Please note: gmail confidential mode DOES NOT replace or override existing Champlain security controls and policies. Students, faculty and staff still should not send emails with Personally Identifiable Information (PII) like descriptive medical terminology/records, credit card information, social security numbers, or other sensitive and private data.
How do I enable confidential mode on an email?
1. Click the padlock icon at the bottom of the compose screen:

2. Select your desired options in the Confidential Mode options screen:

3. The email will now show a blue outline, with the option to edit confidential mode settings at the bottom:

Done! If needed, you can manage your confidential mode messages in your Sent folder, for options like rescinding access to the message.
