New Employee - Email, Phones & Voicemail, Remote Access

All faculty and staff associated with Saint Michael’s College are granted email accounts (username@smcvt.edu) . You can access your email via a quick link on mySMC portal to Office365 Email, or by using the Microsoft Outlook client installed on all SMC computers. Faculty ands Staff email is dependent on employment, so once employment ends, this account is disabled.

The College scans email for spam and viruses using a software called Barracuda. Suspicious email is quarantined and you’ll receive an email from Barracuda with the option to delete the message or read it if you know it’s legitimate. If you take no action, the email will automatically be deleted after 30 days. You’ll find additional information about Barracuda on the IT Communications portal page.

IMPORTANT NOTE: No one from IT will ever ask you for your username and password, or other private credentials. If you receive an email asking for your credentials, or asking you to click on a link for more information, the email is likely a phishing scam. Please forward ALL suspicious email to ithelp@smcvt.edu so that the Helpdesk staff can follow up on the issue.

Phones and Voicemail

When your office phone is configured, you’ll receive a Cisco system generated email message with your PIN for voicemail and a link to the IT portal page for Voicemail Instructions. Your voicemail is linked to your email (messages are transcribed as a text and emailed to you along with the audio message). Your computer has softphone software installed called Cisco IP Communicator; with a pair of headsets, you can use your computer as your telephone to send or receive calls.

Remote Access

If you have College-issued laptop, you can access the network remotely using our Virtual Private Network (VPN) software called “Pulse Secure”. In your Start menu you’ll find a link for “Pulse Secure In your Start menu you’ll find a link for “Pulse Secure” under All Programs. After clicking this link you will be shown the option to Connect. Once you click Connect you will be prompted to supply your Mikenet credentials. After entering your credentials this tool will automatically map to the network drives, as well as provide access to other campus resources (just as though you were on campus). Once you are finished, choose Disconnect, to end the VPN session.
