File Management
Every employee is given a personal folder on the network called their home directory or Z: Drive. This folder will have the same name as your Mikenet login. By default, Windows programs will save the computer’s hard drive (C: Drive). This is NOT our preferred file storage location, as files stored locally are not automatically backed up and cannot be restored in a hard drive crash. We strongly recommend that your college-related work files be stored on your Z: Drive.
So how do you get your file to the right location? You will need to change the Default Save Location, use the “Save As” option from your file menu, then browse to your Z: Drive and save your file there, where it’ll be safe and secure when you need it again. Most programs, including Microsoft office, will allow you to change your DEFAULT SAVE LOCATION to another location (such as Z); this needs to be done only once per program. It is easy to do so and highly recommended. If you need help changing your DEFAULT SAVE LOCATION, please contact the IT Helpdesk at x2020 and our friendly staff will walk you through the process.
The College also has shared network drives available for saving files which need to be shared with your department or team called the O: Drive. All faculty have access to the Academic Share; however, not all departments have shared drives. If your department has a shared drive, your manager will need to fill out a Network Share Access Request form in order for you to have access.
