Looking to create a group chat in Teams?
You do not need to request a full Team site if you are primarily looking for real-time group chat and read-only file sharing. This can be done with a named chat group. Read more below.
How to Create a group chat

Open Microsoft Teams.

Select the New Chat button.

Select Add group name and enter a name for your group chat.

In the To: line, type the phone numbers, email addresses or names of those you want to include in this group.
Note: If you are starting a group with a new contact, they will need to accept your group invitation.

Type a message and send it to finish creating your new group.
Note: You can also go to any one-on-one chat, click Add People and add people to the chat to create a group chat.
Customize your group chat
At the top of your group, you can:

Select the chat's picture to choose a group picture. You can scroll through the available emojis, Remove the current picture, or Upload a picture.

Name the group chat.

Video call the group.

Audio call the group.

Screen sharing shares your screen to the group chat.
Note: Screen sharing in a group chat is not currently available in Teams for Windows 11.

View and add participants view the participant list and add people to the group. You can also remove people from the group by selecting this button, hovering over the name of the person you want to remove, and selecting the X next to the name.

Pop out chat opens the group chat in its own window.
