Filtering Data in the Power BI Service

The most common action taken in the Power BI Service is filtering a report to narrow down data and find what you are looking for based on certain criteria. To filter a report, navigate to the Filters pane on the right side of the report page. This will display the filters available to you on this specific page, as well as those available to apply to all pages if desired. This pane may be minimized, so be sure to open it via the carrot icon.

To open a Filter, click the small carrot icon next to a filter. Depending on the type of filter, and the type of data being filtered, you will have different options for filtering. You may encounter a single-selection filter, or a search bar to find a specific ID or name, or a box to enter a date or time. The above filters are for the entire page.

To filter a specific visual, click into the visual to bring up the visual filters in the Filters pane. Notice that these will be in a distinct category from the page filters, and will disappear if you click away from the visual:

Filter Order and Resetting

The order in which you apply filters matters. If you apply a page-wide filter, and then go to apply a visual-specific filter, you will often have less visual filters available because the page-wide data is already being filtered.

The same applies in reverse; if you filter a visual to an ID or name, and then apply a page filter for a different name or ID, your visual will not display any data.

No matter which type of filter, you can always reset the filter by clicking on the small eraser icon on the filter. If you wish to reset all filters to their default state, click the green Reset icon in the top-right of the report screen. If your data looks incorrect, ensure your filters are applied correctly!
