Do I need to use a certain browser?

Power BI does not have a recommended browser. However, if you’re running into an issue where a report doesn’t seem to be displaying correctly or you don’t see all of your report filters, trying a different browser may help.

What do I use to sign in?

Use your Middlebury email address and password to sign in to Power BI via single sign on. You may be asked to provide MFA verification for your Middlebury account when you sign in.

Where are my reports?

When you sign in, Power BI automatically displays your favorites and most frequently used reports, then your most recently used reports. If you don’t see your report there, go to Shared with me at http://go.middlebury.edu/reports. This will open a list of all of the reports you have access to.

Once you’re in Shared with me, you can change how reports are sorted in the top right. Date (Newest) is the default view, but you can also select Name (A-Z) for an alphabetical sort.

Where did "Shared with me" go?

Shared with me is not currently on the Power BI homepage. You can access it at https://go.middlebury.edu/reports in order to see the complete list of your reports.

How can I favorite or bookmark a report? 

If there’s a particular report you use frequently, you can favorite it within Power BI so it’s listed on your homepage under “Favorites and Frequents.” To do this, open the report and select the star icon near the top left.

We don’t recommend book marking or favoriting reports within your browser or saving a report’s URL. This can cause intermittent errors where you are redirected to the wrong environment or receive a message saying a report does not exist or was deleted. (If this happens, sign out of Power BI, close your browser, then sign in again at go/powerbi.)

How do I filter report results?

If your report has filter options, they appear on the right-hand side when you open the report. The filter sidebar may be collapsed; clicking on the sidebar will expand it. From there, you can select which filters to use.

Your report may also have automatic filters to select from like term code or status. These are also usually listed on the right-hand side.

I want to save my filters so I don't have to enter them every time.

When you have the report filters in place, select the ribbon icon near the top right. This opens the personal bookmarks menu. Select “Add a personal bookmark,” then name it. If you want this filtered view to automatically open when you open the report, check “Make default view.”

Personal bookmarks won’t disrupt how anyone else uses the report.

How can I export data to Excel?

Data export may not be enabled for reports that contain sensitive data in accordance with Middlebury’s Data Classification Policy.
If data export is enabled:
Hover over the data you’d like to export.

  1. A popup menu with several options will show up near the top right-hand corner of the data. Select the three dots.
  2. Select “Export data.”
  3. In the window that appears, select “Summarized data” and then the data format you need.
  4. Select “Export.”
  5. Download the exported file following your browser prompts.

I need access to a report.

The best person to ask about a specific report is the data steward for that area. They can help direct you to the correct report or request access to a completed report if needed.

I keep getting a message that my session is expired.

Sign out of Power BI and then sign in again at go/powerbi to resume your session.

This can happen if you’re frequently moving between the pre-production environment and the production environment. To avoid this issue, it’s best to use different browsers for pre-production and production. You can also use the same browser with one environment in an incognito or private browser window.

My reports disappeared/I'm getting a message that my report does not exist.

The first thing to check is whether you’re signed in to the GHMEC production environment or not. Look at the top navigation bar in Power BI; it should be dark green with the GMHEC mountain logo in the left corner. If your top navigation bar is black, you may have been mistakenly redirected to the wrong environment. Sign out, go back to go/powerbi, and then sign in again.

If your top bar is green, go to “Shared with me” from the Power BI homepage to check the list of reports you have access to. You can use the search bar in “Shared with me” to help find a report. If you still don’t see the report, contact your data steward or the Helpdesk with the name of the report you’re looking for.

Is this the test or production version of my report?

When you look at the list of reports you have access to in “Shared with me,” one of the columns lists the report owner.

If your report is still in testing, the owner will usually show as Midd (Department Name) [Test]. Do not use reports that are in [Test] for anything other than testing. Reports in [Test] usually point to test data and may not be up-to-date.

Reports that show Midd (Department Name) as the owner are in production.
