Autodesk’s AutoCAD & Revit

What is this service?

AutoCAD is a computer-aided design (CAD) program used to create precise 2D drawings and 3D models. It allows engineers, architects, and designers to draft technical plans—such as building layouts, mechanical parts, and electrical schematics—using accurate measurements and geometric tools. The software includes features for layering, annotation, dimensioning, and editing designs so they can be shared, revised, and used for construction or manufacturing.

Revit is a building information modeling (BIM) software used by architects, engineers, and construction professionals to design and document buildings and infrastructure? It allows users to create detailed 3D models that include not only the geometry of a structure but also embedded data about materials, dimensions, and building components. Because all views (plans, sections, schedules, and 3D models) are connected to the same model, changes made in one place automatically update throughout the entire project.

Who is eligible for this service?

All active Middlebury student, faculty, and staff network account holders can access AutoDesk’s AutoCAD & Revit applications.

How do I learn about this service?

Here are some links that discuss the two software applications and the differences between them.

How do I access AutoCAD & Revit?

These software applications are currently available in Johnson 211 ( HARC Lab ) – but access to this lab is restricted to HARC ( History of Art & Architecture ) students. Note that a professor can request these applications to be installed in a classroom or lab for the school year.

Access to a downloadable copy of AutoCAD & Revit software applications is available by request by using the Request Access button in the upper right of this page.

Users can put in a ticket, wherein they will receive an e-mail from Autodesk inviting them to create an AutoCAD account with their Middlebury College credentials (e-mail). Once an Autodesk account is created, the user is allowed to download the software on personal computers
