How to activate a new Champlain account

Account activation at Champlain involves a few steps. Once activated, you'll have access to all Champlain online resources and services.

Account Activation

Step 1: Getting Started

Please visit welcome.champlain.edu to begin.

To begin, enter your username on the initial page. Your username will be as follows:

  • Student Username: “first.last”, where first is your full first name and last is your last name. For example, student Benjamin Jones would be benjamin.jones. (Note: The period between first and last is required.)
  • Faculty/Staff Username: “flast” where f is the first letter of your first name, and last is your full last name. For example, Robert Smith would be rsmith.

 

 

Step 2: Confirm your Identity

After entering your username, you'll be asked to confirm your identity. Follow the prompts to confirm your password with AD, and if needed, with your email as well. 

First-time users do not need to authenticate with email since your account activation is not yet complete. 

Authenticate with Temporary Password:

To log in with AD, your current/temporary password is as follows:

  • Student Temporary Password: your birthday, formatted as MMDDYYYY (ex: June 10, 1989 would be written as 06101989) Any months numbered as a single digit must include the leading "0" to be correct. 
  • Faculty/Staff Username: Your 7-digit Faculty/Staff or "Datatel" ID number. (ex: 1234567) If you do not know your ID number, please call ChampSupport at (802) 860-2710 or the People Center at (802) 651-5800 to verify your identity over the phone and receive your ID number. 

Authenticate with Email:

To verify your ID with email (if required) click the "authenticate with email" option.

It will display your Champlain email address like the example below:

To log into your Champlain email, log in or "add an account" in Gmail. If logging in for the first time, you may have to enter the temporary password provided by ChampSupport. 

Look for an email like the example below for your confirmation access code:

Enter the confirmation code on the Welcome page. 

 

Step 3: Set Challenge Questions

Once authenticated, the next screen will prompt for "Challenge Questions" - these are set up so you can reset your password or unlock your account without contacting support. 

Follow the prompts to pick questions (or enter your own) and enter each respective answer. Make sure these are questions and answers you can easily remember  in the future. 

Step 4: Set Account Self Service 2-factor 

The Welcome account self-service page includes a 2-factor option to allow an alternate method for verifying your account if you need to use this page for a self-service password reset or account unlock. This step is optional but strongly recommended:

If you choose to set it up, click the "setup" button. This will reveal a QR code - open a 2-factor code app (like Google Authenticator) and scan the code to add the account on your device. Enter the first code offered by the app to verify your setup. 

 

 

 

Step 5: Re-enter the website

After completing the initial account confirmation process, you will be returned to the main Welcome login screen. Enter your username again to continue:

Step 6: Change Password:

After entering your username this time, you will see a different set of options. Click the "change password" button to continue:

 

On the set password screen, enter a new password that meets the requirements listed:

 

After seeing a successful confirmation of your changed password, the activation process is complete! Proceed with a few other steps below to ensure your account is fully set up. 


Step 7: Google 2-Step Verification

All Champlain accounts are required to use 2-step verification in Google. New accounts will be granted a 1-month grace period to enable this requirement before being locked out and requiring a manual reset with the Champsupport helpdesk.
