MiddCreate: Getting Started

MiddCreate provides space on the web where all active Middlebury students, staff, and instructors can:

  • experiment with digital tools for teaching and learning
  • explore and connect their learning
  • create a digital identity that is owned and managed by you, to take with you when you leave Middlebury

MiddCreate is frequently used to create portfolios, build websites, digital scholarship, and to experiment with web-publishing technologies like WordPress, Omeka, Scalar, and others. MiddCreate is a place that offers flexibility beyond what can be offered on larger enterprise Wordpress services like sites dot middlebury.

Get Started with a domain name

  1. Go to http://www.middcreate.net
  2. Click the Login to Middcreate button at the center of the screen.
  3. Log in with your Middlebury credentials.
  4. Choose a domain name (for first-time users). Consider your domain name carefully–thinking about the purpose of your domain and who might see it.* For example, you might choose a domain that includes your name (e.g., xavierdoe.middcreate.net) or it is recommended to create one that does not include any personal information (e.g., heartsandsmarts.middcreate.net).
  5. Once your domain is created, the cPanel to manage your domain will appear.
  6. Click Applications to see the long list of applications you can install and use on your domain.

Note: While your domain name can be changed later, it’s not easy to do.

How do I install Wordpress on my domain?

  2. On your CPanel, locate the Featured Applications and click WordPress.
  3. Click Install this Application in the upper righthand corner.
  4. By default, the installer will name the installation directory as “blog.” To install WordPress on your domain without a directory (e.g., example.middcreate.net versus example.middcreate.net/blog), delete the “blog” directory name.
  5. Update the admin username and password so that you will be able to remember and use that information to log in directly to the WordPress instance.
