Canvas: Troubleshooting the Google LTI Integration

Tags google canvas

The Google Apps LTI in Canvas makes it easier for instructors and students to share content from Google Drive, submit Google Docs for assignments, and collaborate within a Google Doc. Browser settings affect the integration between Canvas and Google, and browser updates can reset the settings to defaults that interfere with the integration.

The error can look like this in Canvas:

Authorization failed. Please click "Authorize" to try again.

You need to authorize this integration in order to use it.

Please sign in to your Google account and authorize this integration.

Clicking on the AUTHORIZE button can result in the same error appearing. If this happens, use the following steps to troubleshoot your browser settings.

Check Browser Settings

Instructure has a list of recommended browsers and their settings for Canvas. Visit this page and make sure the browser you are using is supported and has the recommended settings.

Reset Browser Settings and Cache

In most cases allowing third-party cookies will allow the integration to authorize. In some cases you will also need to clear the browser cache and cookies.

  1. Verify that your browser allows Third-Party Cookies.

    1. Enable third-party cookies.

      1. If you are using Incognito mode in Chrome make sure “Block third-party cookies in Incognito mode” is not checked.

    2. Check to make sure you do not have browser plug-ins or extensions that block third-party cookies.

    3. Refresh the page with the Google integration and AUTHORIZE. If you get the same error go to Step 2.

  2. Clear your browser cache and cookies.

  3. Close your browser.

  4. Re-open your browser.

  5. Revisit the page with the Google integration and AUTHORIZE. If you get the same error go to Reset the Google Integration below.
