What’s the difference between the version of Gemini that Middlebury has access to and the version I might have for personal use?
The version of Gemini available through Middlebury’s existing Google Workspace for Education license includes core features like text-based chat, help with writing and brainstorming, and basic image generation.
Middlebury does not license the paid Gemini plan. This means:
-
Gemini will not integrate directly with tools like Gmail, Docs, or Drive under the current setup.
-
Features like shared prompts (shared “Gems”) or advanced NotebookLM integrations are not available.
If you’re using a personal Google account, you might see different features depending on your subscription tier or access level. Please make sure you are using your Middlebury account when working with Middlebury data, as it offers advanced data protections.
How do I know if I’m using Gemini under my Middlebury account or personal account?
To confirm you're signed in with your Middlebury account:
-
Look at the email address listed under your profile icon in the top-right corner of the Gemini page.
-
If it ends in @middlebury.edu, you're using the institutional version.
-
If it ends in @gmail.com or anything else, you’re using your personal account.
