Google Gemini

Overview

Google Gemini is Google’s AI chatbot/assistant available at gemini.google.com. Middlebury's existing Google Workspace for Education license allows Middlebury users access to Google's latest AI models, provides higher usage limits and provides enterprise-grade data protections.

Who is eligible to use Google Gemini?

Middlebury account holders with access to Google Workspace are eligible to use Google Gemini. Gemini is available by default, there is no special request or installation required.

How do I access Google Gemini with my Middlebury account?

 To use Gemini:

  1. Visit gemini.google.com

  2. Click Sign in.

  3. Choose your Middlebury email account (ending in @middlebury.edu) if prompted.

  4. Begin chatting with Gemini, it’s ready to go!

Tip: If you're already signed in to multiple Google accounts in your browser, make sure you're using your Middlebury account. You can switch accounts by clicking your profile icon in the top right corner of the page.

What’s the difference between the version of Gemini that Middlebury has access to and the version I might have for personal use?

The version of Gemini available through Middlebury’s existing Google Workspace for Education license includes core features like text-based chat, help with writing and brainstorming, and basic image generation.

Middlebury does not license the paid Gemini plan. This means:

  • Gemini will not integrate directly with tools like Gmail, Docs, or Drive under the current setup.

  • Features like shared prompts (shared “Gems”) or advanced NotebookLM integrations are not available.

If you’re using a personal Google account, you might see different features depending on your subscription tier or access level. Please make sure you are using your Middlebury account when working with Middlebury data, as it offers advanced data protections.

How do I know if I’m using Gemini under my Middlebury account or personal account?

To confirm you're signed in with your Middlebury account:

  1. Look at the email address listed under your profile icon in the top-right corner of the Gemini page.

  2. If it ends in @middlebury.edu, you're using the institutional version.

  3. If it ends in @gmail.com or anything else, you’re using your personal account.

To switch accounts:

  • Click your profile icon.

  • Select “Sign out” or “Add another account,” then sign in with your Middlebury credentials.
